Our spinal bones are present in a column that starts from the skull and continues to the tailbone. These bones protect our spinal cord running through an opening called the spinal canal. While most people are born with a small spinal canal, spinal stenosis occurs when something reduces the spinal canal. Common causes of spinal stenosis are bone spurs, herniated discs, thick ligaments near the spinal canal, tumors, and multiple spinal injuries.
You may not feel any spinal stenosis symptoms. But when symptoms occur, they spread gradually from one part of the body to the other. Spinal stenosis primarily causes tingling, numbness, and pain in your lower back and neck. You may feel cramping in one or both legs when you stand or walk for prolonged periods. It can also cause problems maintaining the body’s balance and weakness in raising your arm, hand, or leg.
Spinal stenosis treatment includes medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antidepressants, opioids, and steroid shots. You may also need physical therapy and steroid shots for pain relief. Many people also resort to surgical procedures, including laminectomy, laminotomy, and laminoplasty. But if you want to prevent going under the knife, you can opt for non-invasive treatments with fewer side effects.
Due to their natural ability to transform into any other type of cell, stem cells can be taken not only from your own body, but from a different person (likely, the umbilical cord), and transplanted into your problem area. The cells will adapt and take on a different “form” as if they were there since the beginning.
Stem cells can be concentrated and activated. While many types of stem cells are a good starting point for practical use, it is the concentration and activation of the cells that has truly made it an effective therapy. Certified practitioners are able to tweak these cells to address exactly the problem you are facing.
How Does It Work?
Platelet Rich Plasma is astoundingly simple in concept; your doctor or medical technician inject a laboratory made concentration that is created from your own blood. That is right, your own blood. Essentially, PRP is a specialized healing plasma.
The benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma will have you feeling completely revitalized, as it is your own natural plasma, which has had the most platelet-dense part of your blood, added back into it. The result is a highly-charged infusion of plasma with a particularly high content of platelets.
How Does It Work?
Your doctor will first ask about your medical history and symptoms and perform a physical exam. They may also perform different imaging tests to identify the cause of problems, like X-rays, MRI, and CT scans. These tests show your doctor a clear picture of your spinal canal changes, which helps them determine the right treatment for your condition.
For your spinal stenosis treatment, you will be referred to a doctor who specializes in nervous system disorders, known as a neurologist. Depending on the severity of your condition, you may also have to visit a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon. Drink plenty of water before and after your procedure. During the visit, answer the doctor’s questions about your medical history, previous injuries, any supplements you have been taking, and other vital details.
After the surgical spinal stenosis treatment, you may need three months to return to everyday life. But it may take longer for spinal fusion, depending on how complex your surgery was and how well you’re progressing in rehabilitation.
