Dr. Otten Extended My Career By 5 Years: How CELLAXYS and PRP Therapy Reinvigorated a UFC Fighter

Evan Dunham is a former UFC fighter who owns his own Jiu Jitsu studio and has been visiting CELLAXYS for several years.

“I spent 5 or 6 years in the UFC, fighting and training all the time before my shoulders got to the point where I really couldn’t work around it,” Dunham told CELLAXYS. “I [started] looking for other solutions besides surgery.”

Evan was experiencing problems with the mobility of his shoulders, and it was taking a toll on his training regimen as well as cutting into his competitive edge. The downtime of an invasive surgery would spell horror for his career, so he began looking for less hostile treatments.

“I came across doctor Otten and he suggested doing PRP on my shoulders,” Dunham said. “I found a lot of success with [PRP] and would find about 6 months of relief.”

Typically results last for much longer, but during these months of relief, Dunham says he trained every day, twice a day.

“If I hadn’t been training so hard, I think those 6 months would have been closer to a year,” Dunham said.

As with all his patients, Dr. Otten took the time to evaluate Dunham’s options based on his specific case.

“When I first met Evan, he had developed significant post-traumatic arthritis, which is very common in our patients,” Dr. Otten said.

According to Dr. Otten, invasive surgery or Stem Cell therapy were not the best options, given that Dunham only wanted 4 to 5 days of downtime with each procedure. After further consultation and some prescreening procedures including X-Rays and MRIs, Dr. Otten recommended PRP therapy.

“What we found with Evan was that Platelet Rich Plasma therapy was exquisitely effective with him to reduce his pain and keep him in the ring,” Dr. Otten said.

Dunham reports that the treatments have been effective thus far and that he has enjoyed his time with the CELLAXYS team. “Dr Otten is a great guy,” Dunham said. “We clicked right away with his great personality. He doesn’t talk down to you like many other doctors and helps you fully understand your options. I’ve got nothing but positive reviews when it comes to PRP and Dr Otten. He extended my career by about 4 or 5 years.”
